How I Spent Last Friday

Once upon a time, I could honestly say I lived for the weekend. As a teacher, the dismissal bell for students rung around 2:45, and by 3:00 PM, the last bus would have rolled off. By 3:05, I would be walking, almost running to my car, with that weekend attitude- ready to unwind and “do me.” My Fridays and weekends have since changed, not because of my roles as a mother or wife. But because I have allowed myself to become consumed with busyness, forgetting how to rest and relax my mind and body.

A couple of months back, I was convicted, not once or twice, but three times after listening to individuals in different settings share about the Sabbath day, a Holy day of rest(Deuteronomy 5:14) So, I admit I got to thinking. What does rest currently look like for me? Nothing. Non-existent. In fact, I needed rest: time for stillness, time for relaxation, and time to take care of myself.

Brene Brown says, “It takes courage to say yes to rest and play in a culture where busyness represents status.” This is contrary to what I believed, thinking that my courageousness is what kept me busy and striving to stay ahead and to win.

I am happy to share that my perspective has changed because I want to be a healthier me mentally and physically, and have the weekend feeling again, even if it only involves sitting on the couch binge-watching a new series or going walking or bike riding. I am working towards a full day of rest on the weekend, disconnecting from the computer and emails and being chore-free. I am almost there. To celebrate my progress, I want to share five little things that helped me walk into last weekend like the boss of my life.

  1. Issa Vibe: Music sounds better on Fridays. I turned the radio volume up, opened the shade on the sunroof, and vibed to music as we rode down HWY 98.

  2. I Took A Nap: It is said that power naps improve your alertness, mood, and energy level. Well, I tell you, this nap was everything. I woke up feeling rejuvenated and refreshed. I walked two miles.

  3. I Shaved My Legs: The picture explains it all.

4. I Did My Nails: As much as I like to get pampered, I decided to try Color Street nails, a gift from my friend. Color Street nails are 100% nail polish strips you apply by simply placing the strip on your nail and contouring it to the shape. After that, you apply the topcoat, and it is a wrap. Ok, it takes a little precision. But it’s nothing you cannot handle.

5. I Finished an Audiobook: When I take road trips, I usually purchase and listen to audiobooks. Just as I was finishing my nails, I finally finished Better Than I Know Myself by Donna Grant and Virginia DeBerry. It was a great listen, though extensive in length- over 16 hours long.

Take time to delight in rest and relaxation for yourself. Set aside one day for your Sabbath. To gain a greater perspective on the Sabbath, check out this awesome message titled Sabbath Margin by Priscilla Shirer.
