We Welcome Funding and Grant Partnerships
Unfinished Empowerment Organization is a 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit serving children, families, and communities in Hattiesburg, Mississippi and surrounding areas.
Our mission is to empower children and families through education, mentorship, and holistic support—providing the resources, encouragement, and community needed to thrive.
We address educational, social, and emotional barriers through community-based programming designed to foster resilience, leadership, and long-term opportunity.
Community Need
Families and youth in our region face persistent challenges that impact academic performance, emotional well-being, and long-term success. These challenges include:
Limited access to enrichment and after-school programming
Gaps in mentorship and academic support
Barriers to coordinated family-centered services
Limited leadership development opportunities for youth
Research consistently shows that structured after-school programs, mentorship, and family engagement significantly improve academic outcomes and reduce long-term risk factors. Our organization exists to respond to these needs with evidence-informed, community-driven solutions.
Unfinished Empowerment’s work is needed in the Pine Belt area because local youth and families are navigating high poverty, increase academic support for students to compete in a global society, and elevated risk factors that limit long‑term educational and economic opportunity.
Hattiesburg’s overall poverty rate is approximately 28%, meaning more than one in four residents live below the federal poverty line (Census, 2025). These economic conditions often cause limited access to enrichment opportunities for children and teens, all of which nonprofits like Unfinished Empowerment can directly address through mentoring, academic support, and family‑strengthening services.
School districts in the Hattiesburg areas, namely Hattiesburg Public School District and Lamar County School Districts have shown successful outcomes according to the districts' report card published on the Mississippi Department of Education’s website. Even so, students from traditionally underserved communities still are challenges with not meeting the college‑ and career‑readiness indicators.
This data underscores the need for community partners to provide extended‑day tutoring, test preparation, soft‑skills coaching, and postsecondary planning so students can translate a high school diploma into meaningful college or career pathways.
Lastly, a statewide analysis of Mississippi youth involved with the justice system identify clusters of risk factors including prior school suspension, family instability, peer delinquency, and limited access to pro‑social supports, all of which significantly increase the likelihood of re‑offending without targeted interventions. The Mississippi Division of Youth Services have communicated the importance of community‑based programs, counseling, and mentoring in local areas to reduce delinquency and promote public safety, pointing to the need for more prevention work in communities like Hattiesburg and surrounding counties.
