Giants Fall
Who or what is the Goliath in your life?
Goliath is used metaphorically to represent anything in your life that hovers over you, hindering your progression, whether it's spiritually, mentally, financially, or physically. Goliath is also a biblical character- a giant who stood six cubits and a span equivalent to 9.75 feet in height (1 Samuel 17). Goliath was a serious problem for Saul and the armies of Israel. For 40 days, he challenged the armies of Israel morning and evening, ready to throw down the gauntlet and claim victory for the Philistines: "Why do you come out and line up for battle…Give me a man; let us fight each other" (1 Samuel 17: 8). However, fear restricted the soldiers from action, for the very sight of Goliath was intimidating and terrifying. They ran every time they saw him.
Then David, described as little more than a boy, glowing with health and handsome (1 Samuel 17:42), comes along and accepts the challenge. But before he could take his first step towards the battle line, he was met with opposition from his brother, Eliab, and doubt from Saul. Nonetheless, David was confident in himself and, most importantly, confident in God. He boldly recited his qualifications and ability to take down Goliath: " Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them (1 Samuel 17: 35-36)." After David stood his ground, Saul approved his mission.
David approached Goliath with only five smooth stones and a sling. What a joke, Goliath might have been thinking? After all, who brings stones to a sword fight? David, that's who! With one stone to the forehead, David took Goliath down.
Like David, you may be met with opposition, doubt, or fear when going up against a giant. Remember that the giant in front of you is never bigger than the God inside of you (Christine Caine). With God, you will gain the victory (Psalm 60:12).
I would love to hear how God is working in your life. Please share a victory that you have gained with God.
